Robert Schober & Vijay Bhargava

Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?

I am studying because I aspire to become a faculty member in a good research university or to be in a research-oriented position in industry.

Why did you decide to study at UBC?

The communications research scope in the Electrical and Computer Engineering department at UBC is among the world's best.

What was the best surprise about UBC or life in Vancouver?

Well, I find grad life challenging as well as interesting. During the course of my study, I have met students of different races and cultures which is a unique experience. The spectacular UBC campus, calm blue ocean beside, view of snow-capped nearby mountains refresh my mind whenever I find myself overloaded with my grad studies. I know I am passing the best times of my life here.

What do you hope to accomplish with your research?

Cooperative diversity schemes have tremendous potential to be considered for next generation broadband wireless communication systems. My goal is to design practical, simple and low complexity cooperative diversity systems to achieve the target high data rate and quality of service. Successful solutions in this regard will leverage reliable transmission of different high data rate multimedia applications in future wireless networks.

What has winning a major award meant to you?

Winning this major award brings encouragement, creates motivation for future success, and establishes self-belief.

What advice do you have for new graduate students?

Remain focused on your career goal, explore scholarship opportunities once you are here, and last but not least, enjoy your life here in Vancouver (the world's most livable city). Cheers!
