Research

Research topic:

Teaching English as a second language

Research supervisor:
Ling Shi
Research description:

I'm doing research about the teaching of English writing in China and what happens when students trained there go on to use English writing in international contexts.

What impact do you hope your research will have?:

I hope I can contribute to furthering understanding between those involved in education in North America and in China; we are seeing more and more exchanges and cooperation, and I see a real need for both sides to both better understand each other and to understand the role that English plays in today's world—not as a language that only belongs to one group of people, but that has potential to be used in a number of different ways for a number of different purposes.

Why did you choose to come to British Columbia and study at UBC?:

UBC is a world-class university in a beautiful place, and the faculty in my department are internationally recognized as some of the best. Plus, there are so many opportunities in my field (ESL) at UBC and in Vancouver.

Personal interests / Hobbies:

Listening to music, playing the drums, writing about music

What are your future career goals?:

I hope to build more bridges between English teaching professionals in China and North America.
