Research

Research topic:

Thermochronology of ore deposits

Research group:
MDRU (Mineral Deposit Research Unit)
Research supervisor:
Dr Ken Hickey
Research location:
Earth and Ocean Sciences
Research description:

I'm working toward a reconstruction of the thermal history of a gold deposit in Nevada and trying to make a thermal map of the region which could be used to locate new deposits.

What impact do you hope your research will have?:

If successful, this will be a new way to identify and locate currently undiscovered mineral deposits, or even geothermal systems.

Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?:

I am interested in this area of Geology and wanted to learn about something in more detail. Potentially it will also improve work opportunities when I have finished.

Why did you choose to come to British Columbia and study at UBC?:

Vancouver is a beautiful city with the kind of pace that suits me right now. Academically, the Earth Science department is very strong. MDRU has an excellent reputation worldwide.

Do you have any tips for students from your home country coming to Canada / to UBC Grad School?:

You'll get charged for things that seem totally unreasonable compared to back home, learn to accept it quickly! They work you hard here but place a lot of importance on social life too.

What has been your most memorable Vancouver experience so far?:

Watching the sun go down behind the mountains while sitting on Jericho Beach listening to Folk Fest.

Personal interests / Hobbies:

Hiking, yoga, languages, knitting, reading

What are your future career goals?:

To work in mineral or geothermal exploration, maybe to study some more.
