Research

Research topic:

Bacterial pathogenesis

Research group:
Microbiology and Immunology Department
Research supervisor:
B. Brett Finlay
Research location:
Michael Smith Laboratories
Research description:

I study how the bacterial pathogen, Salmonella, causes disease in its host, and how this bug is able to move throughout the body, interacting with and damaging tissues during its infection.

Why did you choose to come to British Columbia and study at UBC?:

British Columbia has to be one of the most beautiful places on earth—it is an outdoors enthusiast's dream. Add world-renowned researchers to that scenario... that was all I needed to get me to cross the 49th!

What has been your most memorable Vancouver experience so far?:

Vancouver has provided me with many opportunities to try new activities and adventures. For example, coming from Wisconsin, I had never tried any type of downhill winter sport. I could never have imagined myself with my feet strapped to a board, flying down the side of mountain, but now I am approaching my fifth season as a snowboarder, and I just can't get enough!

Personal interests / Hobbies:

I love reading, biking, cooking, snowboarding, and spending time with my friends.

What are your future career goals?:

After graduation, I plan to pursue a postdoctoral position in a well-established laboratory in the field of pathogenesis, ultimately leading to a position in a university setting, teaching and carrying out research.
