Research

Research topic:

Distributed computing systems

Research group:
Networked Systems Lab
Research supervisor:
Matei Ripeanu
Research location:
Kaiser 4075
Research description:

Recent technology advances in data storage device and processor technologies provide new resources that can be exploited to enhance the IT storage system operations. In particular, two main technology advances provide new opportunities; these advances are: the technology trend of producing hard disks of constantly increasing sizes, and the introduction of massively parallel multicore platforms, such as Graphics Processing Units (GPUs), as low cost commodity devices. My research focuses on studying the feasibility of harnessing the new resources to enhance the storage system operations, design a set of mechanisms that allow large scale storage system or application to tap into these resources, and to prototype a storage system that exploits these resources.

What impact do you hope your research will have?:

I hope that my research effort will help with designing the next large scale computing systems that can help us advance critical research projects in biology, chemistry, medicine, and high energy physics. In short, I hope I can contribute, through my research, to the global effort of creating a better world.

Why did you decide to pursue a graduate degree?:

To explore further the computer engineering field, and acquire a new set of skills.

Why did you choose to come to British Columbia and study at UBC?:

In addition to being one of the top schools in the world, UBC hosts top research groups in my research area. Add to that the fabulous location of the University in the beautiful city of Vancouver.

Do you have any tips for students from your home country coming to Canada / to UBC Grad School?:

Be prepared to work hard. But do not forget to explore every park and ride every adventure in BC.
Believe what you read about UBC, and BC, especially that “BC is the best place on earth”.

What has been your most memorable Vancouver experience so far?:

Hiking Grouse Mountain through the Grind trail for the first time did push my limits, but the feeling of victory and the amazing view from the top are unforgettable.

Personal interests / Hobbies:

Hiking, gardening

What are your future career goals?:

To join a world class research institute where I can find the resources and environment to explore my research ideas.
