SWAAC Graduate Student Awards of Merit

Quick Facts

The Senior Women Academic Administrators of Canada (SWAAC) offer Graduate Student Awards of Merit to female graduate students who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in the university or general community while maintaining exemplary academic records. At least three awards, each in the amount of $2,500, will be awarded annually. Each university in the Western provinces may nominate one candidate to this year’s competition. Graduate programs are invited to submit a maximum of one nomination to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

The competition is open to women currently registered in a Master’s or doctoral program at UBC.

Evaluation Criteria

  • Outstanding academic performance
  • Evidence of leadership, including but not limited to such things as:
    • Executive positions in student organizations
    • Participation on committees (student committees and university committees)
    • Organization of special events, conferences, etc.
    • Involvement in advocacy groups
    • Involvement in volunteer organizations, within the campus setting and/or in the general community.

Procedures

Application Procedures: 

Students submit their application materials to their graduate program. Students are advised to confirm their graduate program’s application deadline well in advance.

A complete application package will consist of the following materials, submitted in the order listed below:

  • Updated curriculum vitae
  • Official transcripts for all university-level studies (including studies undertaken but not completed) up to and including the Fall 2009 term. UBC transcripts must be original and official, received by the graduate program in the original, sealed envelope. For universities other than UBC, applicants may ask their graduate program to provide certified true copies of official transcripts.
  • Three letters of recommendation (one of which must be provided by the applicant’s research supervisor). All reference letters must be signed by the referee. Original letters are preferred, but copies sent by fax or e-mail will be accepted. Original letters must be received by the graduate program in original, sealed envelopes. Faxes and scanned copies by e-mail must be sent directly to the graduate program, not via the applicant.
Nomination Procedures: 

Each graduate programs may submit a maximum of one nomination to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

A complete nomination package will consist of the following materials, submitted in the order listed below:

  • Nomination letter from Head of Department or Graduate Advisor (maximum one page)
  • Application materials listed in section above

Please note that incomplete nominations will not be considered.

Adjudication Procedures: 

The Faculty of Graduate Studies will convene an adjudication committee to review the nominations received and select one nominee to be forwarded to the national competition.
