Call for Proposals: Green College Thematic Lecture Series for 2012-13 or 2013-14
The Academic Committee of Green College solicits proposals for interdisciplinary lecture-series to be held at the College either between September 2012 and April 2013 or between September 2013 and April 2014.
Proposals should be for a series of at least six and not more than eight lectures or presentations, to be given by distinguished scholars or other experts who, in most cases, would not otherwise be heard on the UBC campus in that year. The series should have a unifying theme that crosses and/or exceeds academic disciplines; proposals that bear on issues of major public concern will be welcome. Previous series have focused, for example, on “The Emerging Science of Culture and Its Implications,” “The United Nations Millennium Development Goals: Progress and Prospects,” “Non-Human Animals, Humans and Practice at the University,” “The Olympic Games in Myth and Reality,” “Shifting Contexts for Democratic Planning and Governance,” “Intelligent Machines,” “Transforming Canada: Histories of Environmental Change.”
Proposals should take the form of a letter outlining the importance and interest of the chosen theme, a possible slate of speakers and their subjects, a preliminary budget for travel costs, and a scheme of publication or further dissemination. Green College Thematic Lecture-Series are open without charge to all members of the academic community and to the general public, and arrangements can be made for webcasting.
Joint applications from pairs of colleagues representing clearly distinct disciplines and/or including a postdoctoral researcher as prospective co-convenor are welcome.
Green College will provide a budget of $5,000 to be applied to travel costs, accommodation and meals at Green College, and to other approved expenses directly related to the series. The availability of partnership funding from other sources may in some cases be a factor in adjudication: applicants are asked to give details of any other funding that has been secured or will be applied for.
Please specify whether the application is to be considered for 2012-13, 2013-14 or potentially for either year.
Proposals are to be submitted by Monday, April 2, 2012 to Communications Manager Tatiana Tomljanovic, Green College, 6201 Cecil Green Park Road, V6T 1Z1, gc.communications@ubc.ca. Results will be provided by the end of April.
Inquiries may be addressed to Tatiana Tomljanovic or to the Principal of Green College, Dr. Mark Vessey, gc.principal@ubc.ca.
