The Postdoctoral Fellows Office (PDFO) is pleased to welcome Jonathan Lowe of UBC Career Services, who will be delivering a session for UBC PDFs to develop crucial job-finding skills. This workshop kicks off with an expert panel discussion about professional interview best practices. Attendees will then break out into small groups, which will be led by a combination of Career Services staff and industry HR professionals, and they will participate in mock interviews. Every participant will have an opportunity to give and receive feedback on his or her performance.

About the Presenters

Facilitator

Jonathan Lowe

Prior to joining UBC Career Services as a Career Educator in 2011, Jonathan worked as a human resources manager and recruiter in the corporate sector and as an employment counselor and assistant manager for a government funded employment program for internationally trained professionals.  He is passionate about coaching students and professionals in developing the practical tools to create rewarding and meaningful careers.

Panelists

Harish Vasudevan

Harish Vasudevan currently leads the research and commercialization at Tait Laboratories Inc., a start-up working at the interface of nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals. Harish obtained his PhD in Pharmaceutical Sciences from UBC and also has a background in Natural Products, drug development and cleantech. His professional interests focus on integrating scientific disciplines as a foundation to achieving business goals.

Darren Frew

Darren Frew, Director of Planning and Communication at the BC Bioenergy Network, has been a Mentor with the Sauder School of Business MBA Program for four years running. Darren has been active in business development, communications, investment and mentoring in BC’s high-tech sector for 20 years. Darren holds a B.Sc. in Geology from the University of Calgary (1982). As well, Darren is a busy public speaker and a member of Toastmasters International. He belongs to seven Toastmasters Clubs, serving as President for three of them. His service in these and a number of other roles led to Darren being named Outstanding Toastmaster of the Year in British Columbia for 2010/2011.

Michael Craig

Michael Craig is the Director, Regional Underwriting West at Export Development Canada. He joined EEDC in 1995 as a Financing Manager, Pacific North Asia. During his EDC career, he has worked on a number of teams and in a variety of roles, including Regional Manager responsible for Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Turkey and the CIS; Financial Services Manager, Aerospace Team; Corporate Risk Manager, Risk Management Office; Senior Financing Manager, Small Business Finance; and in 2008 was appointed to his current position responsible for commercial markets underwriting in western Canada. Prior to joining EDC, Mr. Craig worked as an Account Manager at Scotiabank. He holds an MBA from the University of Ottawa and a BA (Honours) in Economics from Queen’s University.

Jennifer Potter

Jennifer Potter joined the Faculty of Medicine, MedIT in December 2011 and currently holds a Communications and Human Resources role supporting the MedIT team as an advisor and coach. She has vast experience in Human Resources, People Development, Organizational Development and Public Relations from her career in the private and public sectors and her volunteer work.  She is bilingual in French and English and has a Bachelor in Business Administration and a Diploma in Adult Education.  During her career Jennifer gained experience in Human Resources, Learning and People Development, and Organizational Development with TD Canada Trust, Starbucks, and various government departments and agencies.

Marlene Delanghe

Marlene Delanghe, Career Advisor with UBC Career Services, has coached hundreds of graduate students transition to non-academic careers and is passionate about opening students’ minds to the variety of career options available to them.  Outside of UBC, she is the Principal of Career Solutions, a training and development firm that assists career-committed professionals to proactively manage their careers and organizations welcome and lead their staff.  Her partial client list includes UBC Sauder Business School, Deloitte Touche LLP, BC Hydro, Centre for Drug Research and Development, Edge Training & Consulting, Service Canada, and Fisheries and Oceans Canada.    She is a member of BC Human Resource Management Association and who also sits on the Steering Committee of the Minerva Foundation’s, Women Helping Women Work, as well as contributes to the “Wealth Academy” a series of not-for-profit workshops for women who wish to gain financial wisdom.

John Horn

John Horn, Associate Director, Career Development, of Career Services at UBC, delivers strategic and innovative leadership to UBC’s Career Development team, who provide engaging advising, workshops and faculty-customized programming to over 50,000 students and alumni. As the Editor-in-Chief of The Daily Gumboot he collaborates with nearly 30 correspondents from around the world to share stories and best practices about building community. John is also the Web Services Committee Chair for the Canadian Education and Research Institute for Counselling (CERIC), a Book Reviewer for Activehistory.ca, Co-Founder of The Circle of Literary Judgement, and Volunteer with the KidSafe Writer’s Room. John holds Bachelors and Masters Degrees in History and is passionate about professional storytelling.

Andrew Horne

After graduating with his PhD in Physiology from UBC, Andrew made the decision to move towards teaching, following on from his extensive enjoyment of some laboratory instructional work he had been doing during his doctoral studies in the Department of Pharmacology.  After a short term as a sessional instructor in the department, following completion of his PhD, he was hired as full time for the 2011/12 academic year, and looks forward to continue in his expanded role as a lecture and laboratory instructor.
